Remington New Model Army .44 Caliber SOLD
Description: The Remington New Army is a .44 caliber, single-action, six-shot, percussion revolver produced by E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y., based on the Fordyce Beals patent of September 14, 1858. They are inaccurately referred to as the Model 1858 due to the patent markings on its New Model barrels, "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW MODEL."; although wide scale production did not start until 1861. This Model was one of the major handguns of the Civil War. The New Model Army was also the last of Remington's .44 caliber percussion revolvers and was favorited by famous showman William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Who claimed "it never failed me". This particular example is a U.S. Military contract gun and is in good condition overall with approximately 60% of the original factory gloss bluing remaining. It appears to be 100% original parts except for the bolt/trigger spring, which was broken and we replaced. All of the numbered parts are matching. The bore in this Remington is very good with only some light frosting and scattered very minor pitting. There is no major pitting, imperfections, or bulges/major damage. The rifling is strong and sharp throughout the barrel. The action is smooth and is perfectly "in time", but the hammer is missing the half-cock or safety notch (this could be fixed by a competent gunsmith for roughly $100). The cylinder locks up tight with no wiggle. As you can see from the pictures, this Remington has a very attractive combat-used look to it. The patina looks even across the entire gun. The original grips on this gun are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs, but they appear to have been sanded and varnished some time back. The U.S. Military inspector's cartouche on the left grip is still visible but a little faint from wear/sanding. If you have been looking for an affordable but attractive Civil War Remington 1858 for your collection this example would be a great choice.
