CASED SET Antique COLT M1861 .36 & M1861/72 .38 Cartridge NAVY Revolvers
CIVIL WAR & WESTWARD EXPANSION w/ACCESSORIES
Description: CASED SET Antique COLT M1861 .36 & M1861/72 .38 Cartridge NAVY Revolvers CIVIL WAR & WESTWARD EXPANSION w/ACCESSORIES Here we present a Cased Pair of Antique Colt Navy Revolvers, the first made in 1863 and the second in the mid-1870s in Hartford, Connecticut. The first is a Model 1861 Navy .36 caliber percussion revolver. The introduction of the 1861 Navy was simply an update to the very successful 1851 Navy, with the primary differences being the round barrel instead of octagonal, and the addition of the creeping style of loading lever. These updates made for a sleek package that very much resembled Colt’s crowning achievement, the 1860 Army. The 1861 Navy still retained its .36 caliber, making this the preferred firearm for many not wanting to step up to a .44 like the Army, while still sharing most of its dimensions. The second revolver is a Colt Model 1861/72 Navy cartridge revolver chambered in .38 centerfire. This post-Civil War Colt Model 1861/72 Navy cartridge revolver was manufactured in the mid-1870s using a mix of percussion revolver parts on hand and newly fabricated components. The Colt Model 1861 Navy was formally adopted by the Union government and was used by both the Army and the Navy. Many of those sold to the military were never martially inspected or marked. Of course, there was a healthy commercial market for these during the war, and many soldiers privately purchased these revolvers as well. In a slightly smaller and lighter package than its 1860 Army big brother, many soldiers and cavalry preferred the Navy in .36 caliber. Of course, these weapons continued to be used well after the Civil War, especially during Westward Expansion. The overall condition for the first revolver is good. Gray patina throughout. The top of the rammer, above the catch, is cracked. The wedge screw is missing. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grip has a repaired chip on the left toe. Numbers match. The overall condition for the second revolver is very good. Traces of original finish with a mostly gray patina. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with good rifling. The grip is solid. Numbers match on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip frame but the cylinder differs. The ejection rod assembly is a replacement. The modern case is in good overall condition though the two corner partitions are loose. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. FIRST REVOLVER: Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.
