WW2 1945 Vintage U.S. Military-Issue 4" Colt Commando .38 Special Revolver
* All-Original and Un-Molested Example *
Description:
This is a late WW2 production Colt Commando revolver chambered in 38 Special, Built with both 4 and 2" inch barrels, the snub-nosed 2" inch guns are often referred to as "Junior Commandos". This is a very nice, all-original example in excellent condition overall, and in perfect working order. This Colt Commando was designed for U.S. Military service and went into production in 1941 and went out of production in 1945. The Commando was based off of the Official Police model made for commerical sales by Colt, so it was easy for them to tool-up and make a number of them. While these Colts were issued to U.S. troops all over the world, the primary recipients were often troops in our military intelligence wings, and not front-line combat infantrymen. These Colt Commandos were a big help to our military, as production of 1911A1's .45's never could keep-up with or equal the demand, and the WW1-era Colt and S&W Model U.S. M1917 revolvers being pulled out of storage and issued to combat soldiers, were just too big and bulky for soldiers that might need to be discreet. These Commandos were a great option as they could fire both the U.S. supplied .38 special ammo and the .38 S&W ammo that we have supplied the Brits among others. They were cheaper to make, took less time to make, and it could be made and assembed by less-skilled workers than the 1911 required.
This example is all-original, in great shape, and in perfect mechanical condition. The original factory parkerizing is still in great shape, showing only very minor handling and storage marks. It is a consistent color across the entire gun, making it quite attractive. The markings are all crisp and clean, the screws in it have nice clean heads and slots, and all of the parts are nice and tight to each other. The bore in the 4" barrel is bright and clean, free from anu pitting or damage, and the 6 chambers in the cylinder are equally as clean. The rifling is still sharp and well-defind from the forcing cone to the crown of the muzzle. The original grips on this Colt are excellent, and both sides are free from any cracks, major damage or wear, repairs, or modifications. The action in thi gun is in-time, and the cylinder locks up nicely when at full-lock. All of the controls on the gun are in good wroking order and do not look or feel worn. There is nothing altered or restored on this Commando, and ti appears to have been well cared-for since it left the factory, If you have been looking a clean, honest, lightly-used, and totally original Colt Commando for you Colt or U.S. Militry weapons collection, this example is extremely nice and should be an excellent long-term investment that has just barely enough wear on it that you could also shoot it from time to time without hurting it's value.
