Austrian Revolutionary War Flintlock Pistol with Unit Marking
Description: NSN, .72 caliber, 11" barrel with a good, darkly freckled bore. This is an attractive and imposing late 18th/early 19th century pistol that has all-iron components and furniture with a small but still discernible Habsburg double eagle on top of the barrel breech. The shortened barrel, unmarked lock, and French-style sideplate have an overall darkly freckled plum-brown patina with some speckled dark pewter gray along the exposed edges and projections. The gripstraps and stock furniture have some further pinprick pitting along with a similar dark plum-brown patina throughout. The European walnut stock has an overall dark brown oil finish with a few spot of minor insect damage around the grip and along the shortened forend which was narrowed slightly during the shortening process. There is an old chip on the right side at the front of the lockplate and numerous small handling marks and bruises scattered throughout. There are some carved rack or unit numbers on the underside of the stock flanking the trigger guard iron: “2 6"; along a third number next to the trigger: “1". There is no provision for a ramrod (which would've instead been worn on a lanyard around the soldier's neck) and the lock is tight and fully functional. This is a handsome Revolutionary War era pistol and would make a nice addition to any collection.
