Italian Model 1889 Revolver 10.35mm caliber
SOLD
Description: The Model 1889 "Bodeo" revolver served as the standard Italian Army service revolver for decades after being adopted in 1891. The Model 1889 saw combat action in World War 1 by which time the Glisenti Model 1910 semi-automatic pistol was selected to supersede the revolver. However, durability issues limited the extent of the Model 1910 in widespread acceptance leading the Model 1889 revolver to see continuous service into World War 2, not to be officially retired until 1945. The Model 1889 was chambered for the 10.35mm Italian Ordnance black powder cartridge and produced in two variations: the type 1 or "Officers Model" with a non-folding trigger and a trigger guard and the type 2 which featured a folding trigger and did not have a trigger guard. Later production a type 3 was produced which was like the type 1 but with a shorter round barrel. This revolver is the type 1 or "Officers Model" and features the 4-1/2 inch octagon barrel with non-folding trigger and equiped with a trigger guard. These were primarily used by officers in the Italian Army and had to be privately purchased with a goverment "allowance". After, dealing with some quality control problems, the Italian goverment required officers to purchase from only firms who could meet the manufacturing standards and were stamped with the royal crest. This example was produced by the Bresica firm and clearly features the royal crest over their name on the left side of the frame. It retains over 80% of the original blue finish. The wooden grips fit well and the butt still features the lanyard ring. The lockup is excellent and the action works perfectly. The bore is bright and has strong rifling. We have no doubt this revolver will function just as well as it did 130 years ago. This would be an excellent choice for a military small arms collection.
