Rare Tranter Model 1878 Revolver (Military Marked And Published)
Description:
Serial #1269, .450 CF, 6" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves.
This is a handsome revolver that has all-matching numbers, and retains 60-70% of the original bright blue finish with the balance flaked to mottled gray-brown, especially along the barrel and topstrap.
The ejector rod housing retains muted original color case-hardening, and the hammer, trigger, and ejector rod are still armory bright with scattered spots of dark freckling.
The frame has the usual Tranter “football" marking on the right side, and has both a “(Broad Arrow) / WD / 1", and double arrow deaccession stamp on the left side.
The checkered walnut grips has numerous small handling marks and blemishes, with a still visible military inspection mark, and double arrow stamp on the left side.
The action lock-up is still tight, and the mechanism functions flawlessly.
This is the very gun pictured on pg. 206 and 207 of “Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud; 2007, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection of rare British military handguns.
