Scarce Antique HENRI PIEPER Model 1893 Gas Seal 8mm Revolver SCROLL ENGRAVE 7-SHOT NAGANT TYPE BELGIAN REVOLVER
Description: Scarce Antique HENRI PIEPER Model 1893 Gas Seal 8mm Revolver SCROLL ENGRAVE 7-SHOT NAGANT TYPE BELGIAN REVOLVER Here we present an antique H. Pieper Model 1893 Gas Seal Double Action Revolver, made by Henri Pieper in Liege, Belgium circa 1896-97. The Pieper Model 1893 was a double action revolver with a gas seal system that used the 8mm Pieper carbine cartridge. The weapon uses a gas seal system similar to that of the Nagant Revolver, in which the cylinder is raised forward on a semi-conical base at the rear of the barrel, allowing a forward movement of the cylinder when firing and as the bullet is inside the case of the cartridge, it is possible to create a seal that prevents the escape of gases and therefore improves shooting performance. Other design elements include a rebounding hammer and swing out cylinder with a hand ejector system. These revolvers were very popular in Mexico with the Mexican government purchasing several thousand. The development of the weapon began in 1893 by the Belgian gunsmith Henri Pieper and from 1896 it began to supply the Mexican government for use by the Rural Police. The 8mm Pieper carbine cartridge was designed in 1895 for the M1893, the 125-grain bullet was fully submerged in case neck and was produced by both the F.N. as by Remington United Metallic Cartridge Company. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Liège dominated the gunmaking industry. In his book Liege Gunmakers Through Their Work. 1800-1950, Vol. I , Alain Daubresse states, “When Liège production reached its summit, more than half of the firearms made in the world came from Liège...” And the foremost weapon maker of Liege at the end of the 19th century was Henri Pieper. Not only did he own the largest weapon factory in the country, but he was also a founding member and managing director of Fabrique Nationale, and so he had nominal control of the two largest industrial entities in all of Belgium. Pieper’s company was among the first in Belgium to adopt the precision manufacture of interchangeable parts. In 1897, his sons took the initiative, and the Henri Pieper company diversified its activities and launched into the manufacture of bicycles, electricity, and gas and electric automobiles.” The overall condition is near fine. Beautifully engraved with nice blue finish. The action is excellent in double action only. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid and sharply checkered. Own the original!
