1873 Colt Single Action Army .45 Revolver 7 1/2" Nickel Checkered Ivory 1st Gen Blackpowder SAA Wild West Cowboy Pistol Letter
Description:
Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver, Nickel Plated with Checkered Ivory Grips & Factory Letter, .45 Cal, mfg. 1878. This early blackpowder Peacemaker recently surfaced out of Texas and has the classic look of a true Wild West cowboy's gun. Interestingly it's serial number indicates manufacture during 1878 yet the factory letter shows it wasn't shipped until 1880. The included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .45 caliber, barrel length not listed (standard 7 ½"), blue finish, stock not listed (standard wood), shipped to H & D Folsom Arms Company, New York, New York, April 12, 1880 as part of a 50 gun shipment. H & D Folsom Arms was a large sporting goods retailer who sold and shipped many Colts to the West through their popular wholesale catalog. The gun was nickel plated very early on in it's life likely by Folsom or a subsequent retailer who received it out West and the ivory grips would have been retailer fitted as well. Overall the pistol retains approximately 60% period retailer applied nickel finish with the balance worn to gray and spider crazing along the barrel. Moderate/heavy wear overall with some surface marring on the cylinder. Original retailer installed checkered ivory grips show very heavy wear with checkering worn smooth and a fantastic yellowed orange/brown color. Heavily worn and rounded lower corners with shrinkage along the gripstraps and typical ivory grain checking from age and exposure. Matching original serial number “42495” stamped on frame, triggerguard, and backstrap with partial number “2495” stamped on cylinder and barrel under ejector housing. Clear Colt barrel address and three-line patent marking with “45 CAL” stamped triggergaurd. Original hammer, loading gate, cylinder pin, and blade front sight with correct bullseye ejector and replaced trigger. Most if not all screws appear original. Action is crisp and functions nicely with five clicks. Cylinder locks up on time with typical mild/moderate play. Bore shows very strong rifling throughout with moderate blackpowder frosting and scattered pitting at the muzzle. A super cool Colt .45 that was without question on the frontier during the height of the Wild West era.
