Colt Python 357 Magnum 6” Blued Finish Made 1977 with Original Box
Description: The Colt Python! A name that has grown in status over the many years since its introduction and initial discontinuance to the point of becoming near legendary. The Python is often considered the “Cadillac” of revolvers or “Ferrari” for those in the modern era. Designed to best any .357 Magnum revolver produced at the time, production of the Python began in 1955. Built originally of carbon steel in either a blued or nickel finish, a stainless version was added in 1983. The stainless version was produced until 1996. The original carbon steel models lasted in general production until 1998. Given the Python’s appearance, both unique and stylish for the time, the revolver found itself appearing in many films and later video games. Such media depictions have only added to its mythos over the years. The Python is most easily recognized by its vented rib, though many Colt revolvers later used this same feature. They are known for their extreme accuracy. Part of the reason for this is, Colt was famous for intentionally under sizing their chambers and bores in order to increase the accuracy of their revolvers. A tighter barrel means greater control over the bullet via a squeezing effect. In general, the Python’s grooves should be roughly .352 inches instead of .357 inches in diameter. Another reason for the Python’s exceptional accuracy lies in the basic Colt design. When the revolver is at full cock, just as the trigger is pressed, the cylinder locks up for the duration of the hammer strike. Other revolvers have a hint of looseness even at full cock. This example left the factory in 1977 and sports a nice, blued finish. It exhibits very little wear if any and has little in the way of a turn ring, suggesting the revolver has spent most of its life in the box or in a safe. With so little use, the action should be very tight. The bore has no rust or pitting, which should result in a superb level of accuracy. The chambers of the cylinder are very clean on the face, with only a bit of oil present. There is a set of small nicks in the cylinder over one chamber. The rubber grips are not original. The original box is present, and it is in good shape. Despite the introduction of the new Python 2020 model, these older snake guns still retain their high collector value and in some cases are going up in price, particularly non-standard versions such as those with special barrel lengths, special finishes, etc... What originally went for hundreds of dollars is now going for thousands of dollars. Price: $2,650.00 Handgun Caliber: .38 Long Colt, .38 Special, .357 Magnum Manufacturer: Colt’s PT. F.A. Mfg. Co.
