Here we present an antique Cased E.M. Reilly London Retailer Marked Etched Panel Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in 1877 in Hartford, Connecticut. The New Line was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884, with the .22 caliber being manufactured between 1873 and 1877 with a total of roughly 55,343 being manufactured. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. It was designed to be a handy pocket-carry revolver, chambered in .22 rimfire, which was very popular for self-defense in those days.

The revolver features 7 shots of .22 rimfire. Of all the Colt “New Line” revolvers made, the .22 caliber was the only one featuring a 7 shot cylinder. All other calibers utilized a 5-shot cylinder. Etched on the left side of the barrel is “COLT NEW 22”. The backstrap is marked “E.M. REILLY & Co. 16 NEW OXFORD ST. LONDON”. Edward M. Reilly (1816-1890) worked initially under his father Joseph Charles Reilly (1786-1864) and then took over the family business and became a leading and innovative gunmaker and retailer in the second half of the 19th century. He exhibited his wares at the World's Fairs including London and Paris in the 1850s. By at least October 1859, Reilly had taken on partners and changed the name of the company to E.M. Reilly & Co.

The overall condition is very fine. Original and excellent nickel and fire blue finish. The etched panel is clear. London proofs. The action is excellent. The bore is in great shape with strong rifling. The rosewood grips are in fine shape. The case is fitted and lined and also remains in fine condition. A fantastic set!
