Description:
NEW YORK Shipped M1878 COLT “Frontier DA” Revolver
Double Action .44-40 Colt Made in 1901
Here we present an antique Colt 1878 Double Action Frontier Revolver, made from 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut. The M1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. The 1878 Frontier was a much larger and more reliable version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolver. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. Despite all of this, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the Model 1878 made between 1878 through 1907. A previously included factory letter indicated the revolver had a 4 3/4 inch .44-40 caliber barrel and nickel finish when shipped to M. Hartley Co. of New York City on 23 Nov. 1901.
One curiosity regarding this revolver is the stamped “R.A.C.” on the trigger guard. This is the sub-inspection mark of U.S. Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. Out of the 51,210 Model 1878 revolvers made, 4,600 were made for the United States Ordnance Department in 1902 and known as the “Philippine” models. They were intended to equip the Philippine Constabulary in the Philippine Insurrection. Though this revolver isn’t one of the 4,600, as we know they were all chambered in .45 Colt and had 6 inch barrels, it’s possible that this part was government inspected but not used to build the military revolver. Then, eventually used by Colt as a civilian revolver.
The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The side is marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER”.
The overall condition is fine. The nickel finish was applied after it left the factory. It is well done and nearly complete. Blue accents on the hammer and trigger are 90%. Markings are clear and legible. The trademarked hard rubber grips are in great shape. The bore is very good, clean with strong rifling. Lanyard ring has been removed. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.
Caliber: .44-40 WCF
