Classic COLT “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER” Model 1878 Double Action C&R Revolver .44-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter Made in 1905!
Description: Classic COLT “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER” Model 1878 Double Action C&R Revolver .44-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter Made in 1905! Here we present a Colt 1878 Double Action Frontier Six Shooter Revolver, made in 1905 in Hartford, Connecticut. The M1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt's factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. “Colt Frontier Six-Shooter” was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. After 1889, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation ".44-40" was added. The 1878 Frontier was a much larger and more reliable version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolver. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. Despite all of this, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the Model 1878 made between 1878 through 1907. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians. The overall condition is good+. Old nickel finish. The action is strong. The bore is bright with sharp rifling! The trademarked hard rubber grips are in nice shape. This handsome vintage Colt is now 115 years old and remains mechanically fine! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.
