COLT PYTHON TWO-TONE STAINLESS .357 MAG 4” PORTED BARREL – MFG: 1983
Description:
Beautiful 1st Gen two-tone stainless Colt Python with 4 inch ported barrel in 98% condition with Factory Letter indicating it was shipped to Dixie Shooter’s Supply in Blakely, Georgia on June 7, 1983. As the letter does not indicate it was originally ported or finished in two-tone stainless, this may have been done at a later date.
Many collectors believe the 1981 to 1985 stainless Python’s are the earliest and the best as most of the older Colt gunsmiths had left by 1985. While some stainless Python’s shipped in 1981 & 1982, they were first advertised in the 1983 catalog.
The gun is exactly as I purchased it back in 2010 with the pictured blue Colt case, paperwork, hang tag, and 2 sets of grips. The case doesn’t have any labels on it. While the grips shown in the pictures are not correct for a 1983 stainless Python, the included Pachmayr "Presentation" rubber grips that are pictured in the case are correct for this model.
The gun has been a safe queen since I’ve owned it and I’ve never fired it. The finish is in excellent condition, with only faint turn lines on the cylinder and slight bluing wear on the sharp edges of the front and rear sights. When I removed it from the safe to photograph it, I inspected the bore and also checked the timing following instructions I found online. The bore is excellent. As for timing, the bolt retraction and “snap back”, cylinder unlocking, bolt drop timing, and cylinder lockup appear to be spot on. I did notice that the ejector rod spring tension appears a little weak compared to some of my other Colt Pythons. I don’t know if this was caused by extended storage and could improve with lubrication and use or if the spring will require replacement.
