COLT'S FIRST SIDE-SWING CYLINDER MODEL! M-1889 NAVY DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER, #11XXX, MADE 1889, .38 COLT CAL
Description: COLT'S FIRST SIDE-SWING CYLINDER MODEL! MODEL 1889 NAVY DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER, #11XXX, MADE 1889, .38 COLT CALIBER. A pivotal model in the Colt line and the beginning of just about all "modern" double action revolvers right up to the present time. This model was in production from 1889-1894 with about 31,000 made. Calibers were .38 Colt and .41 Colt. They were offered in 3," 41/2," and 6 inch barrel lengths mostly with blue finish. This is a first year production nickel example that has obviously seen a lot of use, but is NOT abused. Most of the nickel is worn off to a smooth gray metal with good nickel around the bottom of the trigger guard and in the protected areas. It has matching assembly numbers (1106) on the cylinder release, yoke, frame and cylinder. The serial number is on the butt. All markings are clear including the barrel markings with last patent date of 1888. Mechanically fine with tight lock up (when trigger is pulled and hammer is coming down- as it is supposed to do), fine bore, unaltered front sight. Needs the small screw button end of the ejector rod. The grips are an ugly white checkered plastic made to resemble pearl- these need to go! Fortunately repro Colt rubber grips are available, or originals. This is the only side-swing model made without locking notches on the outside of the cylinder. Most of this model I've seen have shown very hard use and all are seldom observed in any condition. This is a first year production of Colt's first side-swing cylinder model. In 1889 most Colt customers interested in holster sized revolvers were purchasing Single Actions, 1877 Lightnings or 1878 DA Frontiers! This M-1889 was really unique and groundbreaking!
