1877 Colt Lightning Sheriff Model Double Action Revolver 7 1/2" Octagon Bbl First Year One-Piece Rubber Grips Nickel .38 DA
Description: Extremely Unusual Model 1877 Colt Lightning Sheriff's Model Double Action Revolver with 7 ½" Octagon Barrel, Nickel Plated with One-Piece Rubber Grips & Factory Letter, .38 Colt, mfg. 1877. This is a real oddity which we can't quite explain but I am confident there is a story behind it that is now lost to time. The included factory letter states this revolver left the factory with a 3 ½" barrel but it also says it was shipped November 19th 1877 - several months before it should have existed. Any reference published or online including Colt's own will say serial numbers for 1878 production began at 3,000 and that this gun, serial number 3434, was made made in 1878. Normally I wouldn't defend a special gun that didn't letter as such but there's nothing to indicate the barrel was changed outside of the factory. The fit is perfect, the finish looks totally original and matching, and the barrel even tapers from .670" at the breech to .525" at the muzzle the way a standard round barrel would. Prototype? Exhibition piece? Returned and modified by Colt? Special order Model 1877's were made with 7 ½", 8" and even 10" lengths but those would have been furnished with an ejector and octagon barrels were never offered. This gun is a combination that shouldn't exist yet it truly appears to be correct. When you hold this gun and examine it closely you'll agree the barrel has been with it since new. Overall the pistol retains approximately 70% frosty nickel finish which looks factory original and matching throughout with faded fire bluing visible on the screws and rear surface of the hammer. Rare early production one-piece rubber grips fit perfect and are excellent showing just light wear with no chips or cracks. One-piece rubber grips were only manufactured for the first couple years of production and were secondary to checkered Rosewood during this period. The Book of Colt Firearms by R. L. Wilson notes; “…also, one-piece hard rubber grips were produced, but are extremely rare”. Clear three-line patent dates and “38 CAL" marked triggerguard with matching serial number “3434” stamped on frame, triggerguard, backstrap, and rear face of cylinder. The barrel is unmarked. Original cylinder pin is milled flat to fit the octagon barrel and the gun is fitted with an iron blade front sight mounted within a fine dovetailed base. Action is very crisp and functions perfectly in both single and double action. Cylinder locks up tight. Bright bore with clean sharp rifling front to back and light blackpowder frosting throughout. A fascinating and truly unique Colt that will make great addition to any collection - you won't see another one!
