1851 Colt Navy Revolver & Slim Jim Holster WILD WEST OUTLAW OWNED! California Gunfighter Desperado Pistol *HISTORY*
Description: Fascinating Wild West Outlaw Owned Model 1851 Colt Navy Percussion Revolver with Slim Jim Holster, .36 Cal, mfg. 1857. This is an incredible piece of Wild West history which recently surfaced from an old central California estate. Since the history associated with the gun is also from central California it's likely that the pistol never left the area after it's owner was killed. An ancient label affixed to the back of the holster is so faint it took us hours to decipher and a few words at the lower right corner are missing which can be assumed. The label reads: "Six Duster Cap & Ball / owned by Mexican Desperado / at Monterey he was killed / at Carmel after a desperate / fight he claimed two (lives?) / note one notch on (grip?)". Monterey and Carmel are located right next to each other along the central California coast and were witness to much violence during the height of the Wild West era. Most famously the Monterey native Tiburcio Vasquez terrorized the region with his gang of bandidos during the 1850's-1870's. The pistol has a mottled silver/gray finish overall showing moderate to heavy wear with a very natural and unmolested appearance. There is some light surface oxidation forming which I'm sure would remove with careful cleaning but we think the pistol should be left totally untouched as found. The brass gripstraps have a dark mellowed patina and the original wood grips fit perfect with a pleasing worn finish. There is a large notch cut into the left lower edge and evidence of an old museum label on the right side. Matching original serial number "68803" stamped on the frame, barrel, backstrap, triggerguard, and cylinder. The wedge is an old frontier replacement and the loading lever numbered "3966" has obviously been with the gun since the period of use. The loading lever catch is missing and a thin brass blade front sight has been neatly fitted in period. Clear original Colt New York address with traces of cylinder scene visible. Most screws appear to be original. Nice crisp and tight action functions very well and the barrel is tight to the frame without any play. All nipples are clean originals. The bore is uncleaned and dirty but appears to have very sharp rifling front to back with no apparent gouges or pits. The leather "Slim Jim" holster shows tremendous frontier wear and fits the Colt like an old glove. The bottom of the holster is blown out and the leather has formed around the protruding muzzle. This is a museum level piece that really speaks to you. A rare opportunity to own a gritty real-deal outlaw's Colt straight out of the Wild West!
