CRIMEAN WAR Antique COLT LONDON M1851 NAVY .36 PERCUSSION Revolver HOLSTER
BRITISH PROOFED Silver Plated LONDON BARREL ADDRESS
Description: CRIMEAN WAR Antique COLT LONDON M1851 NAVY .36 PERCUSSION Revolver HOLSTER BRITISH PROOFED Silver Plated LONDON BARREL ADDRESS Here we present an antique British Proofed Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with the London barrel address, made circa 1854 in London, England. The U.S. Hartford factory was firmly established, and sales were exceedingly good for Samuel Colt. So, Colt’s thoughts began to drift towards his possible share of the European gun market, and in 1853 he established a factory in London which produced thousands of examples of this model for the British forces in the Crimean War. There were some sales of Colt’s products from the London manufactory but it was an altogether different culture and contracts from the Continent were not forthcoming, so he closed the place in 1856. This revolver was made there in those few short years. Afterward he relied on his very successful Hartford plant which then exported guns to England. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides. Though its name implies maritime use, most Navy revolvers primarily saw use on dry land, including in the Old West and in the historical conflict in Crimea. This one has the London barrel address and London proofs on the barrel and cylinder chambers. It was also fitted with a barrel mounted rear notch sight that would have been superior to the tiny V notch in the tip of the hammer when cocked. A silver plate finish covers all. The black leather holster is from the period and fits like a glove. The overall condition is near fine. Original period silver finish. The action is excellent. The Battle of Campeche cylinder scene remains clear. The numbers match. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The grip is solid with some period chipping at the toe that has smoothed from continued use and age. The leather holster is in great shape for the age and has some surface crackling as one would expect. A great example of a London made Colt Model 1851 Navy and holster rig! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches. Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
