Colt single action Centennial engraving prototype for the Y.O. Texas ranch
Description: Up for consideration is an interesting 1880-1980 Y.O. ranch centennial Colt SAA pistol. This particular one was the prototype for the development of the series engraved back in the early 1980's. It was most likely engraved by Oscar Flores working for the Hendricks Master Engraver group out of San Antonio, Texas. The gun was initially shipped as a single pistol to McBride's Guns Inc. in July 1978 during a period when Colt was transitioning from their 2nd to 3rd generation guns. It was engraved and silver plated at that time with the application of a single piece ivory grip for review by those making the decision as to how these masterful centennial pistols would eventually appear for public distribution. In time the decision was made to place the five pointed Texas star emblem on the top of the back strap of the final pistol as well as on the right side of the grip. This beginning pistol is remiss as far as these two additions go but it is spectacular without these embelishments and it is obviously of Texas origin and is inscribed as the prototype forerunner of the series. It is basically a mint gun with extraordinary engraving having only that usual tarnish that aging always brings to silver plating. The finish shows few if any blemishes and the grip is prestine with a few minor cracks confirming it's 45 year history . The action is crisp with a 2 pound or slightly less trigger pull and the bore is mint. I doubt the pistol has been fired as it shows only slight silver tarnish over the face of the cylinder and around the proximal barrel inside the frame. Time and tarnish may have concealed the firing evidence that is usually left in these areas but if so the gun was fired very few times. The engraving is about as good as you'll see on any pistol with just the right amount of depth in the cuts and the scroll work showing an impeccable Arabesque pattern typical of the New York engravers of the late 19th century. The Star burst pattern is well presented on the left recoil shield along with the punch dot markings that so typify the Helfricht era. The mahogony box that it came to me in looks very much like the eventual one used when these pistols were shipped out in the early 1980's. Not sure how it came into being but it is a beautiful extremely well made presentation item that will of course come along with the pistol. Thanks for taking a look and if any questions arrise I'll try and answer them through the G.I. site or by telephone. Jack SOLD Handgun Caliber: .45 Colt |
