SOLID SILVER GRIPPED, ENGRAVED COLT SAA “Peacemaker” .38 SPECIAL Revolver 1st Generation Made in 1901!
Description: SOLID SILVER GRIPPED, ENGRAVED COLT SAA “Peacemaker” .38 SPECIAL Revolver
1st Generation Made in 1901!
Here we present a First Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver chambered in .38 Special, manufactured in 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Single Action Army was introduced in 1873 and has become one of the most iconic firearms in all of history, thanks to its widespread use by the U.S. military, civilians and, more recently, in Western films. The model continues to be known by several different names such as the “Peacemaker” and the “Equalizer”. It has been said that “God created men and Samuel Colt made them Equal”, hence the latter title. This gorgeously engraved SAA features the phrase “CALL ON ME AND I WILL EQUALIZE” inscribed on the backstrap, between the two huge slabs of engraved silver that are the grips of this stellar one-of-a-kind piece. This is an excerpt from a longer poem that has long been quoted about the Colt revolver and appears on one particularly famous Colt Single Action Army that belonged to the famous Western artist Charles M. Russell: “You need not fear a man that walks beneath the skies, though he be strong & you weak, I will equalize.”
This revolver features solid (not hollow) silver grips with a golden representation of Mexico’s coat of arms on the right side—an eagle clutching a snake while standing with spread wings atop a cactus. The engraving is characterized by large feathery plumes with a tiny zig-zag (rather than punch-dotted) background. The frame, cylinder, trigger guard, breech & muzzle of the barrel, and the front sight bear floral scroll engraving with a punch-dot background. The back of the hammer is finished in blue as an accent to the rest of the gun, which is finished in nickel.
The underside of the right grip panel reads "925/IAK/SA". "925" is the purity mark for 92.5% sterling silver. In order to achieve these complex designs, silver crafters have to add hardening agents, mostly copper, for the silver to maintain its shape. Silver on its own is far too soft. The right grip is inscribed "JOS A. SHARPE," and the left has "MEMPH. TEN." The grips are of significant weight and make the gun sit heavy in the hand.
The overall condition is very fine. The action is excellent. The bore is bright. The engravings are sharp. This example has everything you want: custom engravings, silver grips, and fine condition! This thing has panache!
