Description:
How many times have we seen initials on grips, and wondered who they were? Well, this time there are two sets of initials, and both individuals have been positively identified!
Inside the Right Grip is “FB” and “L.L.B.”.
Freeman Beitz (a.k.a. Lawrence Freeman Beitz) was born in Breckenridge, Texas on Mar 31, 1890 and died Jan 7, 1965 in Oklahoma City, OK.
Lawrence Lloyd Beitz was born July 11, 1914 in Oklahoma (probably in Oklahoma City), and died Aug 20, 1986 at Tahlequeh, OK. His social security number, as lightly scratched on the cylinder, makes possible the identity of the father and son initials. Evidently Freeman Beitz originally owned this Colt revolver, and eventually passed it on to his son, Lawrence.
There is much research left to complete on this revolver, as the family’s whereabouts during 1900 to 1912 are unknown. By Sept 22, 1913 Freeman Beitz was in Oklahoma City, OK where he married Bonnie Marie Heil.
The Colt Factory letter states that this Colt SAA #278030 was shipped to Norvell Shapleigh Hdwe Co., St. Louis, MO as a 38-40, 4-3/4” barrel, Blue, Stocks Not Listed, on May 28, 1906, with 25 similar guns in shipment.
This Colt is 100% all-original with matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The gate number 1268 also appears under the frame. The grips fit perfectly as original, with those initials deeply carved inside. Both grips show about the same amount of wear to the checkering. The grips are full and unbroken, with only a short thin sliver gone along the upper right backstrap. The butt was never used as a “hammer”, so the backstrap remains unbent and free of the severe damage often seen. The gun cocks and locks up with decent tightness, and both the safety and half cock notches are functional and in the correct places, so hammer needs no re-building. The gun retains hints of blue, with the balance being gray.
The bore has strong lands and grooves, with the expected scattered patches of pitting. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one a 6 bore condition. The steel front sight remains in its original 0.52” x 0.29” tall configuration. The ejector head is perfectly straight and fits nicely to the underside of barrel, not badly bent downward toward the cylinder as so many are.
The original markings are very bold, including the serial numbers, patent dates, “38 W. C .F .” and expected “41” on underside of barrel. Only the barrel address is weak, probably as originally factory-rolled and then worn later. Note that underside of this barrel is not badly beat up and gouged around the cylinder pin area, as most have been fought with a pliers or other inappropriate “tools”. Only moderate dings appear in the area of the barrel. All screws appear to be original and remain unusually nice, showing no signs of buggering with a bad screwdriver.
A better-than-average Colt SAA, with possible upside value remaining as more on its original Texas-Oklahoma owners can be researched. Few antique guns come with any evidence of history or original owner identity!! My research files on the Beitz family go with the sale of this old Colt. Also includes Colt letter info from their shipping records (cost $150).
Comes with an old holster that appears to have been neatly shortened from a 7-1/2" SAA length. Note the "7-1/2" stamped above the stock number "208". The upper 3/4" of stitching is loose, but this is above the trigger guard position. All other stitching is tight and sound. The holster is pliable, but does show quite a bit of surface cracking. The holster is OK for display, but not for use!
In some cases, I can ship this gun directly to a C&R licensed individual.
