This 1900 vintage Colt SAA is not recorded with a 2 1/2 inch barrel in the Colt factory shipping logs. It is listed as a standard 4 3/4 inch in .45 caliber, and the ivory grips are not mentioned. So it is either a good forgery or a factory error. The frame without an ejector housing mount and the barrel markings look good and factory original, and the aged ivory grips fit very well. Manufactured in 1900, the frame has the smokeless powder horizontal cylinder pin latch, but not the verified proof for smokeless powder use. The gun has no original finish, but rather a blue-brown-grey patina. It has a very tight action and it is mechanically perfect. Since it will not letter with a 2 1/2 inch barrel, it is priced at approximately half what it would otherwise be valued. It is a very attractive little gun, and short barrels are rare.
