** SOLD ** 1936 4" Colt Police Positive Special SA/DA Revolver in .38 Spl. w/ Beautiful Period Stag Grips
Description: This is very handsome pre-WW2 Colt Police Positive Special SA/DA revolver with a 4" inch barrel and really cool period-correct stag grips. This Police Positive Special was made in 1936 and is 100% original except for the grips, and is in very good condition overall with perfect mechanics. Every part on this gun has a very even patina in regards to finish wear including the grips, indicating that the grips were put on it very shortly after it was bought new in 1936. Chambered in .38 Special, this was a popular revolver model as you could shoot the low-recoil .38 S&W cartridges thru it, or if you needed more knock-down power it could handle the more powerful .38 Special cartridges with ease. In total it will shoot 4 different cartridges which made it pretty versatile and much easier to find ammo for regardless of where you were in the U.S.. It will chamber the .38 S&W and much more powerful .38 Special already mentioned, and the Colt .38 caliber revolver cartridges named the .38 Colt New Police and .38 Super Police will Fit with a 4" inch barrel, this revolver was capable of good accuracy and has a good balance to it despite the relatively small frame size. Like most of the Colt revolvers from this pre-WW2 period, it was built with a great attention to detail with every part hand-fit and finished. The end result was a extremely smooth and slick action, and a very tight lock-up when at full-lock. This Colt Police Positive Special is no exception and has a very nice and smooth action. The grips on this gun have been a source of debate. As you can see in the pictures, they are really good-looking grips. They are both classy and perfectly fit, in addition to giving the gun a lot of character and making it stand out from others. The debate was whether they were carved bone, or "Indian Trail" carved bone made to look like Stag, or if they were actual Stag with possibly some enhancement from hand-carved bark/texture added on what would otherwise be a plain area. After a ton of inspection we have come to the conclusion that they are in fact real Stag, but probably have been enhanced with some hand-carving/jigging to add more texture/bark and character to them. This was definitely not uncommon in the 1930's, and remained so thru the 1960's for that matter. You can see some of the totally natural bark on both grip panels right at the edge were they both meet the front and rear grip straps. We think the bark on sides has been enhanced with a little handiwork from a skilled carver. Regardless of HOW they ended up looking the way they do, they are DEFINITELY very attractive! It is very good that the the wear on them is a perfect match to the gun, indicating they have been on it a long time. Like I mentioned previously, you can see a lot of the natural bark and color at the front and rear edges near the grip straps in pictures 12 and 15 of this listing. These neat old custom grips fit the gun really well dimensionally, and are tight to the frame with no wiggle to them. This is just a classy and handsome vintage Colt revolver that would be a lot of fun to carry afield and shoot in addition to being an investment. It also could be a fun and pretty inexpensive start to a Pre-WW2 Colt Revolver collection if you are ready to start an entirely new section of Colt or wheel-gun collecting. There are not too many pre-WW2 Colt revolvers this neat and in this price range.
