Colt 1851 Navy, Made 1857, Full Martial Markings

Description:
DESCRIPTION:  One of the so-called "Navy-Army" Colt 1851 Navy 6-shot percussion revolvers, caliber 36, with standard 7.5" octagon barrel, small brass cone front sight, original walnut grips, single action, brass trigger guard and grip strap. This one has full martial inspector markings, indicating US military issue and use. Sub inspector markings include an "S" on the cylinder next to the serial number, a "C" on the bottom of the left grip, an "L" on the left side of the trigger loop, an "M" on the left side of the trigger guard, an "S" on the inside of the grip curve, a "C" on top of the grip just behind the hammer, the "US" marking on the left side of the frame just below the patent marking, and an "N" on the left side of the barrel just behind the wedge.  Main inspector cartouches are GGS (George G Saunders) on the left grip and WAT (Capt. William A. Thornton) on the right grip. Correct Hartford barrel address. Serial # 79756 matches in full or partial in all the correct places (grip, trigger guard, frame, barrel, cylinder, wedge, arbor, ramrod).
CONDITION:  Overall metal is a dull gray mixed with surface staining. Hints of blue are undertoned on the barrel and hints of original case colors are undertoned on the frame and hammer. Original walnut grips are sound with no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, exhibiting expected dings, scratches and wear loss along the bottom edges. Both cartouches fairly clear with some light wear. All serial #, barrel address and patent markings mainly clear except for the cylinder, which has partially worn patent info and engagement date. Cylinder retains 50% sharp cylinder scene and has all 6 nipples intact with no damage; cylinder stop pins show wear/flattening. Action is tight, tight cylinder lockup with no wobble, and has positive clicks on all phases of the hammer cock. Barrel-to-frame mating is very tight with no wobble and no damage to the lug pins. Bore is very good with typical light scattered black powder fouling but has consistent rifling and no deep pits or craters, no rings or bulges. Loading lever has slight side-to-side/minimal play. Grades overall NRA Antique Very Good.
