LETTERED 1882 COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER .44-40 WCF SAA Revolver 7 1/2 Antique ETCHED PANEL Black Powder Frame .44-40 6-Shooter
Description: LETTERED 1882 COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER .44-40 WCF SAA Revolver 7 ½ Antique ETCHED PANEL Black Powder Frame .44-40 6-Shooter Here we present an antique Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Model 1873 SAA Revolver in .44-40 WCF, manufactured in 1882 in Hartford, Connecticut. This one was finished in nickel with a 7-1/2 inch barrel and shipped 25 July 1882 along with 149 others to Hartley & Graham of New York City. Hartley & Graham was one of the 5 biggest dealers in the entire US that handled the bulk of Colt’s firearms, which they then distributed around the country and sometimes outside the country. The Colt Frontier, or Frontier Six-Shooter was Colt's 1873 revolver manufactured in .44-40 Winchester caliber instead of .45 so that it was compatible with Winchester’s Model 1873 among others. Production began in 1877. “Colt Frontier Six-Shooter” was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was originally acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. Later, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation ".44-40" was added. These revolvers made excellent companions to rifles at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians. The overall condition is very good. There remains some traces of original nickel finish with a gray patina throughout. The action (hammer/trigger) remains strong and holds all 3 notches and has all 4 clicks; cylinder indexes well at times but intermittently off by a small amount. The walnut grip is in great shape and smooth. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The numbers match on the barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. A very nicely preserved and archive lettered Colt Frontier Six-Shooter for your collection! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches. Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
