Colt 1929 Detective Special - Genuine 'Gangster Gun' ?
Description: An excellent and very interesting Colt Detective Special .38 'snub nose' revolver produced in 1929. There is good circumstiantial evidence to indicate this particular 'snub nose' was involved with organized crime during Prohibition. A Colt Factory Letter states this Detective Special was shipped to the Roberts Hardware Company, Utica, New York on November 8, 1929. It is listed as a blued revolver with pearl grips. The Colt letter states there were two guns in the shipment. Obviously someone special ordered a pair of pearl handled 'snub nose Colts' directly from the Colt factory to be shipped to Utica, NY. The Colt Detective Special, a six shot .38 special caliber revolver with two inch barrel was was brought out by Colt in 1928 to fill law enforcement needs for a compact powerful weapon suitable for the needs of detectives and other plainclothes officers. The 'Detective Special' was a utility firearm and very few were ordered from the Colt factory in the form of a pearl gripped pair. From the 1920s well into the 1950s Utica, New York was labeled the 'East Coast City Of Sin'. Utica became a hub for bootlegging, vice, and racketeering. 'Organized Crime' ruled the city and infiltrated its political system - it is reported the city coroner ruled that a man who was found shot twice in the head committed suicide. At least a couple of 'Crime Families' fought for control of Utica and murders were common - five murders were committed in utica within a five month period in 1930 according to the Utica Observer-Dispatch newspaper. One has to wonder what manner of individual would feel the need to equip themselves with a pair of pearl handled snub-nose-thirty-eights only ten days after the disasterous stock market crash of 1929? Were the pair ordered by an individual, or intended as a gift ? Somewhere along the line, the pair was separated. THIS ONE HAD ITS FACTORY SERIAL NUMBERS FILED OFF - THE ONE ON THE FRAME BELOW THE BARREL AND THE ONE ON THE CRANE, an act leaving little doubt this revolver was intended for some serious criminal use........But whoever removed the obvious serial numbers didn't know Colt marked their serial numbers on THREE locations on the their Detective Special revolvers - the third place the number was stamped was on the inside surface of the sideplate and it remains clear as the day it was stamped. Intended to be used by criminals guns with obliterated serial numbers wind up at the bottom of rivers, buried in obscure locations, etc. For some reason this Colt didn't meet that fate. This is a mystery, not only has the revolver survived in excellent condition but its prpoer serial number is prominently stamped on the butt. Another interesting feature is that the small spots on the frame and crane where the serial numbers were removed are blued. The sharpness of all edges and original markings plus color show the finish is Colt factory blue of the 1920-1930 period. There must be quite a story as to how this Colt, having been one of a special pair shipped to a gangster controlled city, modified for criminal use, was then saved, legitimized, maybe factory refurbished, and thereafter taken good care of. Another mystery is whether the mate to this Detective Special has survived. Condition: This revolver is in excellent condition. The metal retasins 95%+ factory finish with some light handling/aging wear. The bore is shiny near excellent with a couple of very minor age spots. mechanical functioins are excellent, and the grips are excellent. Pre 1930 Colt Detective Special revolvers are scarce, especially examples in excellent condition, and doubly so are Detective Specials with good claims to playing a part in the 'Roaring Twenties'.
