Colt 1878 Frontier Double Action Revolver 38-40 Caliber
Description: Colt 1878 Double Action "Frontier" Revolver with Colt Archives Letter in 38 WCF caliber (38-40), with 40% original nickel finish as stated on the Colt Archives letter, appears to be original Hard Rubber Grips. Tight cylinder action. Good bore riflings and lands with two dark spots in central area of bore and some oxidation near the muzzle end. 4.75" barrel. Serial Number is 41930 which puts it in the year 1900 production. Some pin prick pitting on the cylinder and a few small marks as shown with about 60% finish lost. The story of the 1873 Colt Single Action Army begins in 1872, when the Hartford, Connecticut, firm issued its first large-frame, self-contained metallic cartridge revolver, the .44 caliber Model of 1872, which collectors call the “1871-1872 Open Top.” The factory had produced metallic cartridge conversions of earlier percussion revolvers, yet Colt’s Open Top Model was a totally new revolver and is thus considered the parent revolver of the legendary Colt Single Action Army.
