RARE 1970 Vintage Colt Border Patrol .357 Magnum Revolver (2nd Issue)
** 1 of Only 5356 Made! **
Description: This is a beautiful all-original 2nd Issue Colt Border Patrol .357 Magnum revolver, one of only 5356 blued guns made. These very rare guns were made between 1970 and 1975 for both the U.S. Border Patrol services and the commercial market. There is no official record as to how many were actually bought by the U.S. Border Patrol versus sold commercially. This model was built on Colt's Trooper Mk.III "J" frame and featured a 4" inch "heavy" barrel, a 6-shot fluted cylinder, factory adjustable sights, and checkered Walnut target-style grips. The Border Patrol had a slightly less-polished frame than the Trooper Mk.III but was still offered in a gloss blue finish as well as a Nickel-plated finish, with 5,356 mfg. in blue and 1,152 mfg. in Nickel. Today, Colt Border Patrol revolvers are highly sought-after by collectors as one of the harder models to acquire from the early to mid 1970's. This particular example is in superb condition overall and is one of the first Border Patrol models we have had in many years. This Border Patrol is serial number J40887 making it's date of manufacture in the first year this model was offered, 1970. The serial number appears to have been mis-stamped at the factory with a "U" prefix at first, then restamped with a "J" over the "U" when the error was discovered. There are two close-up pictures provided of the serial number on the frame and crane in this listing, picture 25 is where you can see the "J" over-stamp the best on the cylinder crane. The factory blue finish on this Colt is still bright, handsome, and near perfect, rating 99%. The only deduction we can find is the tiniest bit of finish loss on either of the frame screws. The remainder of the factory blue finish is in mint condition, including the blue on the hammer and trigger. The face of the cylinder shows no scorching or wear and the cylinder star at the rear is in like-new condition. The bore in this Colt is mirror-bright and pristine, with perfect sharp rifling and zero visible imperfections, erosion, or pitting. The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean and perfect. The factory checkered Walnut grips on this Border Patrol are in excellent condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The only deductions from the grips come from some minor handling/storage marks in the wood located on the butt. The grips are a perfect match to each other, and they are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the metal with no wiggle. The checkering on both grip panels is still crisp and in like-new condition. The action on this Border Patrol .357 Magnum is extremely smooth, slick, and in perfect time no matter how it is cycled. All of the controls on this revolver are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight. If this Colt has had more than handful of rounds fired thru it since leaving the factory 51 years ago we would be VERY surprised. This Colt comes with a vintage factory box but there is no way to know if it is original to the gun as the label, manual, and end-flap is missing. If you have been looking for pristine, near-perfect Colt Border Patrol revolver for your collection here is your chance to get the best one we have seen in decades!
