EARLY AND EXTREMELY SCARCE WORLD WAR II COLT COMMANDO REVOLVER WITH 2 INCH BARREL, #12XXX, MADE 1942
Description: EARLY AND EXTREMELY SCARCE WORLD WAR II COLT COMMANDO REVOLVER WITH 2 INCH BARREL, #12XXX, MADE 1942. The Commando Model was similar to the Official Police Model .38 Special revolver except it was made for wartime production with a bead blast matte blue finish, smooth trigger, uncheckered cylinder latch and checkered brown plastic grips. The standard Commando had a 4” barrel with comparatively few made as “snubbies” with 2” barrels. There is a good deal of information on these in the excellent book U. S. HANDGUNS OF WORLD WAR II by Charles Pate. In it he states, “…two-inch Commandos were for intelligence and plain clothes military personal.” He also states, “Only 3,450 revolvers were originally shipped to the military with two-inch barrels. These revolvers may be identified by their round front sight and the long company name marking with a ‘CONN’ (rather than ‘CT’) abbreviation for Connecticut. Several thousand four-inch Commandos were converted to two-inch after the war. These revolvers have the later ramp sight and the short company name…” The Commando was made until 1945, making this a very early example. He also states that most of the early guns were shipped overseas. This example has all the original early markings and features including the “flaming bomb” military inspection stamping on the upper left portion of the frame. It is in unusually excellent condition inside and out with only some very minor edge wear mainly to the sharp parts of the cylinder and a touch on the bottom edge of the trigger guard bow. An important military Colt from “The Greatest Generation” and almost never seen these days.
