Gustave Young Engraved Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver in Case
Description: Serial #84309, .31 Caliber, 4” octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a fabulous revolver that has absolutely beautiful floral scrollwork engraving with punch-dot background. The barrel retains about 65-70% of the original bright blue with some mild flaking along the surface as well as some thinning and silvering at the muzzle and along the edges and projections. Additionally, there are some linear scratches radiating from the loading lever pivot screw-end on the right side of the barrel lug. The frame, hammer, and lever have a predominately pewter gray patina with some scattered spots of mild freckling here and there along the surface, heaviest around the hammer and on the recoil shield. The gripstraps have retained about 85-90% of their original silver finish with some very light flaking along the edges that exposes the yellow-ochre underlying metal. The cylinder (which is numbered 85309) has a fairly bright gray patina with spots of pinprick pitting, a still rather crisp and clear stagecoach scene, and a linear region of darker pitting where the metal has lain in contact with the bottom of its case compartment. The engraving is masterfully done with gracefully flowing scrolls accented by crosshatched shading and crisp punch-dots in the background. The “COLTS/PATENT” and “SAMl. COLT” barrel markings are engraved with a distinctive hand in ornate block letters, and there are some fanciful creatures incorporated into the overall scrollwork design. The hammer is likewise engraved with a wolf's head and there is a swooping dog's head on the recoil shield. Close comparison between this revolver and known examples of Young's works on pp. 208 – 221 in “Colt's Pocket '49/Its Evolution” by Jordan and Watt leaves little doubt as to the hand that engraved this revolver, and we are confident in the Gustave Young attribution. The walnut grip is original and has an added varnish finish over unsanded wood. The revolver is housed in its original presentation case (which has an added varnish that matches that on the grip) with dark maroon baize lining, small powder flask, double-cavity Colt mould, and the case key. This is a splendid revolver in fine condition, and has simply incredible engraving embellishing the metal. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection. {Refs. “Colt's Pocket '49/Its Evolution/Including the Baby Dragoon & Wells Fargo” by Robert M. Jordan & Darrow M.
