EARLY 1890’S PRODUCTION 38 COLT MODEL 1877 DA “LIGHTNING” 4-1/2” BARREL, NICE ORIGINAL CHECKERED RUBBER GRIPS, FACTORY LETTER
Description: ********SOLD******** Description: The Colt factory letter notes 38/c, 4-1/2", Blue, Stocks Not Listed, Shipped to H. & D. Folsom Arms Co., NYC, 5 Guns, Feb 12, 1892. The “Stocks Not Listed” entry simply means that the grips were of the standard type for the time (Hard Rubber). Based on the Potocki random sample study, 43% of the 166,849 total production of Colt 1877 DA’s had 4-1/2” barrels, making it the most popular choice. Based on Dr. Richard Marohn’s study of 1877-1897 total production, fully 58% were in 38 Colt caliber. The latter study also proved that blue was the second most popular finish, with 80% of all production being nickel plated. Again, the latter study indicated that 92% of the production were fitted with hard rubber grips. The first Colt M1877 DA’s were chambered for 38 Colt. In August 1877 the 41 Colt was introduced. In effort to provide additional design factor against rupture, the cylinder diameters were increased at this time by about 0.030”. The serial number 86802 appears on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap, and 802 on the rear of cylinder between chambers (see cylinder pictures). The front of the cylinder is stamped “E” by tht factory inspector. By this time in production the serial numbers were no longer applied to the barrels. The gate is numbered 24 and appears to be an old replacement. The hammer slot of the frame is stamped with the factory inspector “40”. The steel front sight on this revolver remains in its original configuration and height. All markings are very distinct on this revolver. The stamped “Colt D. A. 38” is bold and clear. The patent dates, rampant Colt, two-line barrel address, and all serial numbers are again clearly stamped. The mechanism works as it should, with all hammer notches sharp and audibly clicking the sear, providing reasonably tight cylinder lock-up, and with no hesitation in trigger return action. The bore has strong rifling with scattered areas of light roughness. The cylinder chambers are excellent and smooth, with the pictures showing some grease as applied after this gun was thoroughly cleaned. This gun shows traces of original blue on the backstrap, trigger guard, and on rear surfaces of the hammer and trigger. The balance is generally a smooth light-to-medium dark gray patina. None of the surfaces show unusual denting or abuse. The hard rubber grips are unusually nice on this revolver, with checkering mostly worn on the high ridge below the screw. A partial serial number remains penciled inside these grips. The grips fit perfectly, and there are no cracks or chips. Such nice grips definitely add to eye appeal and enhance the gun’s value. Fourteen High Resolution Photographs are included with this listing. All of the revolver’s surfaces have been covered, the major markings are presented, and the three hammer cock positions are also shown in sequence. The last picture is a scan of the Colt Letter, which in itself is worth $150. No FFL Required, can Ship Directly to purchaser. Terms: No International sales.
