Colt Open Top .22 Short Pocket Revolver 1875
SOLD
Description: Colt began production of the .22 caliber Open Top Pocket Pistol in late 1870. It retained the basic three piece construction common to nearly all of the Colt percussion pistols but was chambered for the metallic cartridges that were becoming standard in ammunition. The Open Top was the beginning of Colt's New Line of revolvers chambered for larger calibers. While it was considered antiquated in appearance to the Smith and Wesson line of pocket pistols, it was of sturdy construction with high quality materials. This revolver was made during a time in which the market was flooded with cheap, poorly made "suicide specials". Even though these Colt Open Tops were more expensive than the competition, more than 110,000 were sold in the short run of 7 years. This revolver was a great success for Colt with the Open Top even outselling it's succesor, the "New Line .22" by 60,000 units. This particular example, serial number 64,182 was made in 1875. It is in good condition with much of the original finish remianing on all of the parts. The frame was nickel plated, with the remainder being blued. This model came standard with walnut grips like this example, with pearl, ivory, rosewood, and others being optional at additional cost. They appear to be the original factory grips. The action locks at full cock with the cylinder turning in time, but seems to lack the safety notch required to carry it with a full cylinder safely. The cylinder has some play in it from wear over time and while it locks up at full cock, we do not recommend firing it. This is a great example of this little pistol that was historically important in the evolution of Colt firearms and belongs in any serious Colt collector's inventory!
