Colt, Model 1877 (Lightning), Sherriff/Storekeeper Model, .38 Caliber, Double Action, SN #39886
SALE PENDING
Description: The Model 1877 was Colt's first attempt to produce a double-action revolver and it shows a striking resemblance to its' Single Action Army cousin. This revolver is chambered in .38 caliber with a 3 1/2" barrel and was nicknamed the "Lightning" by Ben Kittredge, a famous entrepreneur, salesman, and news writer of the time. The nickname stuck and Colt used it in its' advertising to go on and produce over 166,000 of them between 1877 and 1909. This particular example was manufactured around 1885-86. It has a very nice blusih patina on its' case-hardened metal barrel and frame and features gutta-percha (hard rubber) grips. The frame shows little wear; the barrel has a very clean bore and shows very good rifiling; the cylinder is fine and the cartridge chambers show little evidence of wear, and it cycles properly with the trigger pull action. The hammer and firing pin are in excellent condition and show minor wear to the finish on both sides of the hammer. It is in wonderful condition for its' age and is fully functional and has been previously fired by the current owner.
