Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon
Description: Here is a Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon.This revolver was also known as a Transition Walker and is one of the rarest prizes of the Colt collector with only 240 being originally built right after the Colt Walker civilian. Only 30 are known to have survived, some being in relic condition. Due to their extreme rarity and the high price of orignals, there have been a few outstanding copies built. I believe this to be one of those COPIES. Some of the features of the Whitneyville Dragoon are the arched Colt Patent marking on the frame which can correctly appear on either the right or left side of the frame. The tiny serial numbers are like the civilian Walkers and the grips which are correctly arched into the frame are also like the civilian Walkers. Whoever built this gun was extremely knowledgeable of both the Walker and the Whitneyville Walker Dragoon and paid extremely close attention to the smallest detail. A few years ago, there was a beautiful and original Whitneyville Revolver at the Ohio Gun Collectors Show and the price tag on that revolver was over one million dollars. Often, serious Colt collectors will have a copy of a Walker, Whitneyville Dragoon or Paterson due to the unavailability of an original, or the exorbitant price of an original. The copy fills a very important place in their collection. In my many years of collecting, I have only seen one other Whitneyville Dragoon copy with a full cylinder scene like this one and that revolver was priced at $12,000.
