Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 “Root” Side-hammer Percussion Pocket Revolver, made in 1866 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Root Revolver, named after Elisha K. Root, showcases Samuel Colt's innovative spirit, crucial to his success. Introduced just six years after the Colt 1849 Pocket, it featured Colt’s first “creeping” loading lever, a solid frame, and a clever cylinder axis pin design. While some small parts were fragile, Colt’s experiments paved the way for more robust designs, influencing the 1855 series of Revolving Rifles and Shotguns.

A standout feature of the Root Revolver is its beautifully engraved cylinder. The Model 1855 Sidehammer sported two engravings depending on the barrel type: the “Cabin and Indian” scene on round cylinder models, and the classic stagecoach holdup scene on others. These engravings not only added visual flair but also showcased the revolver’s effectiveness as a self-defense weapon for everyday Americans in the 19th century.

The overall condition is good+. Mottled spots of original blue are present throughout the example. The cylinder does not lock up or index. Good bore overall with light spots of pitting and a nice shimmer. Solid grip with light edge wear and average amounts of handling. Visible numbers match. Legible markings. Cylinder scene remnants are present.
