ISSUED AND IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR COLT 1860 ARMY REVOLVER
Description: From my personal collection, here is a Colt 1860 Army Cavalry revolver, serial number 118929, directly issued to Private Patrick Moran of Company C, 12th New York Cavalry. Typical of the later model, it has the standard 8" round barrel, 6-shot rebated cylinder, walnut grips, brass trigger guard, steel back strap, blued and case hardened finish, caliber .44 percussion with brass blade front sight and rear sight notch in the hammer. CONDITION: Barrel, frame, cylinder and loading lever are a smooth, light patina mixed with some darker brown tones. The steel back strap likewise has the same toning. The brass trigger guard is a light, mellow ochre. All nipples are original to the cylinder, which retains just traces of the original Naval Engagement scene. The hammer spring is a little weak and the cylinder doesn't quite index to center, but the hammer does hold at both half cock and full cock. Cylinder has sub-inspector initial "H" with a worn "T" on the trigger guard and back strap, worn "B" on each side of the barrel, a clear "W" on the cylinder pin/arbor, a worn but visible boxed inspector cartouche on the left grip and a clear "JT" cartouche on the right grip for inspector John Taylor. All the numbers match on the grip, trigger guard, frame, barrel, wedge, and arbor. Number on the cylinder is not legible. Bore is fair as expected from a revolver that saw hard use during the Civil War - no deep pits, just worn with scattered light pitting. There is a small drilled hole in the front curve of the trigger guard that is threaded, so it must have had some sort of lanyard loop or swivel in it at one time (not pictured). Patrick Moran enlisted on 12/2/1862 at New York City, NY as a Private. On 3/31/1863 he mustered into "E" Co. NY 12th Cavalry. He was Mustered Out on 7/19/1865 at Raleigh, NC. Intra Regimental Company Transfers: * 5/20/1863 from company E to company C * 12/1/1864 from company C to company G. The 12th NY Cavalry was predominantly active in North Carolina, participating in all the major engagements there from 1863 to the end of the war. Full regimental history with casualty analysis, as well as full muster records for Private Moran as pulled from the National Archives, are included with the revolver. Definitely a "been there, done that" Civil War issued Colt 1860 Army with provenance that rates NRA Antique Good. TERMS: No international sales and no sales to Alaska or Hawaii.
