Colt 1860 44 Colt - Civil War Provenance
Description: Last Price Reduction Offered for sale, this 1860 Army Revolver that was assigned to a Pvt of the First Vermont Cavalry. The Colt letter shows it to be shipped March 17, 1862,to Major R.H.K. Whitley, New York Arsenal. A printed sales offering from Morphy s describes the gun being used by Pvt John Hale Powers, of Newbury, VT. Powers enlisted on Oct 2, 1861. He was mustered in as a Pvt on Nov. 19, 1861. He mustered out on Nov. 18, 1864, and later had a son, Hale Powers. Hale became a doctor. The First VT Cavalry fought in most of the major battles of the war. This revolver was later found with another in an estate sale with a rolled up prescription form with Dr. Powers' name on the form, which stated the guns belonged to John Powers. This written provenance has been since lost, but content was confirmed to this seller by a Morphy representative. This gun is in Good, Plus condition. The action functions perfectly and lock-up is tight. The barrel is still shiny with light wear evident. The finish is a patina with three small spots (grain of rice size) of surface corrosion apparent. All numbers match and the cylinder pins are intact. The barrel, at some time, has been professionally shortened by 3/16 inch and a new silver sight installed (battle damage?) Areas of bluing still remain on the grip base and top of the backstrap. A grip cartouche is not discernable. Offered at $1999, shipped to the buyer. This includes a $300 Colt Letter. SOLD Antique: Yes |
