Here we present an antique Colt Hartford English Dragoon Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa 1857 in Hartford, Connecticut. Only about 700 of this variant were produced. It was an interesting group of revolvers for several reasons, one of which is that it was numbered in its own range and has a wide array of features for such a small batch since Colt used new-old stock to complete them. Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight.
This Dragoon’s parts were manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut, then shipped over the Atlantic to be finished and assembled in Colt’s London factory. Very interesting indeed is the fact that about 200 of these revolvers came back across the “pond” to participate in the American Civil War during a period of time when both Union and Confederacy were desperate for small arms. The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON”. “COLTS PATENT” on the left side of the frame. This example’s serial number “533” is within the correct range for this run of revolvers.
The overall condition is good. Refinished. The action is strong. The bore is in very good condition, mostly bright with good rifling. The grip is solid; it has been sanded. The case has some age but is not a factory case; is in good condition. It comes with a nice flask, as well as cap tin, bullet mold, and bullets.
