BELGIAN Made Antique “COLT BREVET” M1851 .36 NAVY Liege Proofed Revolver
SCARCE Belgian Made Revolver circa 1850s-1860s
Description: BELGIAN Made Antique “COLT BREVET” M1851 .36 NAVY Liege Proofed Revolver SCARCE Belgian Made Revolver circa 1850s-1860s Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Brevete Revolver, made in the 1850s-60s in Liege, Belgium. European and American gunmakers were making unlicensed copies of Colt’s guns from the first Paterson days, although they really took off in popularity with copies of the 1851 Navy model. Colt reacted to this by setting up a licensing fee system and hiring an agent to represent the company at the Liege Proofhouse in Belgium, where it was possible to intercept most of the illegitimate guns. In 1851 Colt’s patent agent in Liege, William E. Newton, made a deal with multiple Belgian gun makers to manufacture licensed copies of the Model 1851 Navy. Those deemed of sufficient quality could pay 10 Francs and be stamped “Colt Brevete”, rendering them licensed and the manufacturer safe from legal action by Colt. Several other countries saw licensed copies as well, like Austria and Russian, but typically none as good as the Belgian. This example is one made under license in Belgium (see the Liege stamp on the front of the cylinder) and does not have a visible maker’s mark. Instead of the typical 1851 cylinder scene of the Texas Navy fighting the Mexican Navy, this specimen faintly depicts something different, though so worn that it is hard to discern anything but what appears to be a horse and rider in one small portion. These Brevete Colt copies are very interesting in the collecting world by themselves, and one that is often ignored by most Colt devotees. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong and the lockup of the cylinder is solid. The bore is dim with strong rifling. The grip shows a stable split on the underside and a chip at the heel, otherwise solid. Numbers match. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches Caliber: .36 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
