Very Desirable Civil War Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army Revolver
Description: Offered here is a hard to find, very desirable and fine example of a Civil War .44 caliber Colt Model 1860 Fluted Army revolver, with its original matching numbered fluted cylinder. Many of these early production fluted cylinder 1860 Army revolvers saw hard use starting from the very beginning of the Civil War, with known use by both the Confederacy and the Union, with nice surviving examples such as this one hard to come by for collectors today. The Colt 1860 was produced from 1860 until 1873, with more than 200,000 units made. Only approximately 4,000 of the early production examples were made with fluted cylinders between 1860-1861, with the more commonly seen solid cylinder variants mixed in with the production of these fluted cylinder 1860s. This example, serial number 7180, is one of the later serial numbered examples originally made with a fluted cylinder, and has an 8 inch barrel length unlike many Fluted Army revolvers having 7 1/2 inch barrels. These cylinders have a series of evenly spaced “flutes” in them, which helped reduce the revolver’s weight and were also intended to give the gun a stylish look. However, these fluted cylinders were prone to cracking, lending to their scarcity today, and part of the reason Colt reverted to a standard, solid cylinder design for the majority of the Model 1860 Army revolvers produced. The serial number “7180” is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt of the backstrap, cylinder pin, and rear surface of the cylinder. The wedge is an unnumbered period replacement, as common on many Civil War issued Colt revolvers. “PATENTED SEPT. 10th, 1850” is marked in one of the flutes of the cylinder. “COLTS/PATENT” is marked in two lines on the left of the frame. Various components are marked with a small single letter “S” inspector stamp. The left of the walnut grip is stamped with the bordered “GGS” inspector stamp of George G. Saunders. The cylinder retains nearly all of its safety stops, all the markings are clearly legible, with distinct edges overall and exceptional fitment where the walnut grip meets the metal. A fresh example of a Colt Model 1860 Army revolver that would make a strong statement in any Civil War collection. Price includes shipping in the 48 states.
