Civil War Period Camp Desk with 1851 Colt Navy, Cal. .36 Percussion & Assorted Tools and Paperwork SOLD

Description:
This nicely made Civil War "Camp" or "Lap" desk is in good condition and is totally original.  It has never been refinished or relined.  Best of all, the hidden compartment holds a very nice Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver with ivory grips depicting the goddess of Justice standing on and killing an evil serpent.  The serpent symbolizes lies, or lack of morals and ethics.  A popular image during the Civil War, portraying the Confederacy as the serpent and the Union as Lady Justice.  The Colt, manufactured in 1863, retains much original finish-both blue and color case hardening, has a perfect rolled cylinder scene and all six cylinder safety pins.  The grip straps have at least 80% original silver, and the gun is tight with a crisp action.  It appears to have had very little use.  A plaque on the case top is engraved with the name, "M.L.
