CIVIL WAR Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK DA .31 POCKET Revolver CYLINDER SCENE
Large Frame Double Action BAR HAMMER Pocket Revolver
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK DA .31 POCKET Revolver CYLINDER SCENE Large Frame Double Action BAR HAMMER Pocket Revolver Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Large Frame Double Action Percussion Pocket Revolver in .31 Caliber, made circa 1857 to the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts. This revolver would have been made early in the Allen & Wheelock era which ran from 1856 through 1865. It was designed to be a very simple conceal and carry, self-defense pistol in the turbulent mid-19th Century and likely used in the American Civil War. Ethan Allen was a true family man, investing and partnering with a nephew in a New York sporting goods retailer, hiring another brother-in-law, Thomas Wheelock, who was eventually made a partner, and similarly hiring and later making partner his two sons-in-law Sullivan Forehand and Henry Wadsworth. Because of these practices, his business was very successful. This company was founded by Ethan Allen in early 1800s and soon became a prolific gun-making firm that evolved from Ethan Allen to Allen & Thurber, as well as the Allen & Wheelock Company. It was located in Norwich, Connecticut and Worchester, Massachusetts, as well as Grafton. Eventually it became the Forehand & Wadsworth Company in 1871, after the death of Ethan Allen. The trade names used by Ethan Allen were “E. Allen” between 1831 and 1837 located in Grafton, “Allen & Thurber” between 1837 and 1842 in Grafton, “Allen & Thurber” between 1842 and 1847 in Norwich, “Allen & Thurber” between 1847 and 1854 in Worcester, “Allen & Thurber & Co.” between 1854 and 1856 in Worcester, “Allen & Wheelock” between 1856 and 1865 in Worcester, and finally “E. Allen & Company” between 1865 and 1871 in Worcester. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. Both grips contain an average amount of handling and remain firmly seated.
