Antique U.S. Civil War Starr Arms Co. Model 1858 Army Revolver in .44 Caliber Cap & Ball
** Spectacular All-Original & Matching Example **
Description: This beautiful all-original and all-matching Starr Arms Company Model 1858 Army revolver is fresh out of the woodwork so to speak, having never been offered on the collector's market previously. The .44 caliber Starr Arms Co. Model 1858 Army was made from 1858 to the early 1860's, with approximately 23,000 total manufactured. This extremely advanced and well-made double-action only percussion revolver features a high-polish blue factory finish, a case-hardened trigger, hammer, and loading lever, a six-shot unfluted cylinder, a 6" round barrel with a dovetailed blade front sight, a smooth Walnut 1-piece grip, and a heavy front-hinged frame for quick cylinder removal and cleaning. This Starr revolver was built with the best materials available by extremely skilled gunsmiths, and their attention to detail and expert hand fitting is evident. The Model 1858 Army was a very successful design and proved to be an excellent combat weapon for the soldiers that carried them. While most cavalry and officers carried single-action open-top revolvers or single-shot horse pistols, the rapid-fire ability of the Starr Model 1858 would have been a real firepower advantage. Most of these Starr Model 1858 Army revolvers were purchased by the U.S. Government for Union forces and bear U.S. Military inspection stamps on the grips, with only a small portion of production going to commercial sales. This particular example is serial number 11796 and U.S. Martially marked, making it's date of manufacture likely sometime between 1861 and 1862. It almost certainly was issued and used in combat but apparently was well-cared for. The original factory gloss blue finish is still bright and beautiful, showing only light finish wear for it's age. As you can see from the pictures, the grip straps show a lot of finish wear but the remainder of the gun shows only minor handling marks and scattered spots of finish wear, with the flats of the frame showing great original blue in particular. The overall look of the gun is outstanding. The much less-durable original case colors have faded on the exposed areas of the trigger, loading lever, and hammer, but still show some nice bright color in the protected areas. All of the factory stampings are crisp and clear, and all of the factory stamped numbers are clear and matching. The bore in this Starr is really spectacular. The bore is bright and pristine, with sharp rifling visible throughout the barrel, and there is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections. The six cylinder bores are equally as pristine, and all of the original nipples are in excellent condition as well. The original grip on this Model 1858 is the only part of the gun that has been altered since leaving the factory, as someone along the way tried to remove/obscure the U.S. Government inspection stamps. Whether this was done by the soldier that "liberated" this revolver from the U.S. Military's inventory, or whether it was an idiot that thought it was a prior owner's initials, we have no way of knowing. As you can see from the pictures, the "work" was limited to just those two spots, and while the right side U.S. inspection cartouche is obliterated, the left side "JWK" cartouche is still visible. "JWK" are the initials for the U.S. Military inspector Lt. John W. Kelly, who inspected Star Model 1858 .44 caliber revolvers and Remington Navy revolvers between 1853 and 1864. The original grip is in good condition overall, and outside of some minor handling marks and a small chip off of the rear it is free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage. The bottom of the butt is stamped with the number "350" and a small "K", whether these are factory stamps or perhaps applied at the unit level we do not know, perhaps the new owner can track this down. The action on this Starr is in perfect working order, like it left the factory yesterday. The double-action is smooth, precise, and perfectly "in time". All of the controls on this revolver are in perfect working order, and the front frame hinge is still tight without any slop in it. We have no doubt whatsoever that it would still shoot just as reliably and accurately today as it did 157 years ago. If you have been looking for a real "centerpiece" type Civil War revolver for your antique arms collection this Starr Arms Co Model 1858 Army revolver would be an excellent choice. It really is a beautiful weapon that would display well with it's eye appeal and unique design.
