French 1822/42 Percussion Pistol

Description:
With a serial #6643, and about .72 cal.,with a round 8” barrel with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces have aged to a mottled gray-brown patina with overall speckles of old light oxidation and some pinprick-light pitting. The brass mountings are toning to a warm ochre patina with a few spots of light tarnish and two small V-shaped chips in the front of the barrel band. The European walnut stock rates about good and  other scattered signs of military service. Any lockplate markings have been lost and the pistol otherwise abounds in remnants of various markings including “1819” on the right side of the breech, “6643” on the left breech flat, “TC de 17-b A” on the left quarter flat and multiple stampings on the left breech flat including: “CHATEL / 9-2-8 / 6643 / 547”. The lanyard ring is intact, the ramrod is steel rifle type, the half cock notch is worn and the action is otherwise robust These were imported by the north and south and saw naval use during the Civil War.
