Here we present an antique E. Lefaucheux Model 1870 “Navy” Double Action Centerfire Revolver in 11mm, manufactured circa the 1870s in Paris, France. Eugène Lefaucheux was born in Paris on September 14, 1832, and died in Cannes on March 24, 1892. In 1851, he met Samuel Colt at the London Exhibition. He filed his first patent on April 15, 1854, which gave birth to his famous Model 54 pinfire revolver. One of his biggest achievements was the partial sale of this patent to the French Navy on May 8, 1858. After modification, the legendary “Model 1870” revolver was born. He was contracted for the supply of 4,000 Model 70 centerfire revolvers signed in Paris with the Ministry of the Navy on February 10, 1870. This was the last handgun produced by Eugène Lefaucheux.

This civilian produced “1870 de Marine” was the first centerfire model originally designed by Lefaucheux in 1868 and was adopted by the French Navy in 1870, hence its name. It is a six-shot 11mm caliber revolver that operated in either single or double action. The barrel is engraved with ‘E. LEFAUCHEUX BRTÉ SGDG A PARIS’. The “SGDG” is the abbreviation for “Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement” or “without guarantee by the government”.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is bright and rifled, but has evidence of being lightly scoured. Solid grips. Legible markings. Metal parts consist of a light gray patina and mild oxidization.
