1860 Colt Army 44 Cal. S/N dates to 1863. Very nice civil war era Colt army with a nice visible better than average cylinder scene. All numbers match including the wedge. An interesting note, the serial number on the cylinder looks like a Monday morning mix up at the Colt factory with the last four digits 6690 instead of 6609 as the s/n is 96609. What a great conversation piece. Think of those rare coins that are misstamped at the factory. The one piece walnut grips appear to be original with easy to read cartouches. The inside channel of the one piece grips if held in the right light, appear to have the serial number but it is a little smudged and smeared. It's what I would expect from a 156 year old gun. The left side grip has three hash marks - if this gun could tell a story! Left cartouche WHR neatly inscribed for inspector William H. Russell. Cartouche of right grip shows the neat cartouche of ordnance Principal subinspector John Taylor - JT. All the martially marked subinspector marks are there and clearly marked. It is more of a clean finish, gun metal grayish silver patina that someone may have cleaned many years ago and the patina is starting to reform. The muzzel is in very nice condition. The gun indexes fine and the half cock works but sometimes the full cock slips. Top of the barrel markings are excellent and very legible. - ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA -
I purchased this gun after a trip to Gettsyburg a few years ago right here on GI. This would make an excellent piece to have for any civil war collector. The Colt 1860 Army was the most popular revolver used in the civil war.
