Lefaucheux Model 1854- 12mm PINFIRE, CIVIL WAR USE, Vintage Firearms Inc
Description: General Specs: Lefaucheux Model 1854, 12mm Pinfire, 33.9oz, 4 3/4" Barrel Serial Number: 30616 The Lefaucheux was the first metallic cartridge handgun to be adopted for service by any military power, the 1854 model was the most widely used military pistol in Europe for decades. This example is serial numbered 30616 and is one of the revolvers supplied to the Union Army. Between September 1861 and June 1862, the Union Army purchased a total of 11,833 of the Lefaucheux model 1854 revolvers. The revolvers were manufactured by E. Lefaucheux and have serial numbers between 25067 and 36900. They were all issued to Army units and saw use throughout the Civil war. This example is stamped on the right side of frame under the cylinder along with the “LF” trademark and its serial number. A partial oval maker’s stamp is visible on the left side of the frame. Mechanics are strong and the cylinder indexes well, the loading gate is intact, functional and latches closed, the ejection rod is not sprung. The bore has four lands and grooves, it has some pitting, externally the gunmetal is uniform in color- please see the photos. The trigger guard has the distinctive spur common to the “military/ calvary” model, the trigger breaks at 5.5lb and can release on half cock. The raised diamond shaped? grip cap retains its lanyard loop. The two-piece walnut grips are original and exhibit some service dings and scratches. A fascinating piece of European design and American history. A revolver that was the technological pinnacle of its day and a gun that fought through the Civil War. Loading kits are available online for the manufacture of Pinfire ammunition.
