Fine Antique Pryse .450 Revolver by Stanton and Co., Webley
Description: A fine and quite scarce early, ca 1876, 'Pryse' type five shot .450 caliber 'Pocket Army'revolver with 3 1/8" barrel. This classic Victorian revolver is marked on the right side of the frame, "STANTON & Co." with their 'C' prefix serial number. Stanton & Co., 1855 - 1890, were among the first British gunmakers to build revolvers utilizing the excellent 'Pryse' patent break-open design wherin the revolver can be opened by exerting pressure on the opposing levers at each side of the breech which release the barrel and cylinder to swing down exposing the back of the cylinder and activating a simultaneous cartridge case extractor. This is an early 'Pryse' revolver and the extractor does not automatically snap back into the cylinder. Shortly after Stanton began building these revolvers Webley brought out a line of 'Pryse' revolvers which became quite famous. This impressive and powerful revolver is quite a handful being chambered for what was the standard .450 British military handgun cartridge of the period. It's pocket-army size - between 'Bulldog' and 'RIC' revolver - is seldom encountered in British revolvers though it was a convenient defence weapon for military officers and police throughout the British Empire. The early, pre Webley, revolvers of this design were not made in large numbers and saw hard use. Consequently few of them have survived, especially in the excellentb original condition of this one. CONDITION: this revolver retains 95%+ strong original nickel plated finish with excellent patina and some light aging. Mechanical functions are excellent, the bore is fine/excellent with sharp rifling, considerable shine, and some light storage aging. The revolver has seen little use and been very well cared for. The screws are excellent. The checkered walnut grip is excellent retaining nearly all its original finish/surface. This is an especially handsome and scarce British Victorian revolver variation which would be difficult to find and very difficult to up-grade. It would fit well in any high condition collection of 19th century civilian or military revolvers. This revolver was found in Canada in the mid 1980s and has been in a private collection since then.
