SCARCE Antique 4-Shot “SWEDISH DARLING” All BRASS .28 PEPPERBOX Revolver
Brass Percussion Single Action Pistol Made in Sweden
Description: SCARCE Antique 4-Shot “SWEDISH DARLING” All BRASS .28 PEPPERBOX Revolver Brass Percussion Single Action Pistol Made in Sweden Here we present an antique Pepperbox Pistol, made by Johan Engholm of Odestugu, Sweden, circa the 1860s. Engholm was born in 1820, living until 1918. His career is said to have begun around 1840 and eventually became the family business all the way through his grandson, Oscar Engholm. Originally similar specimens were attributed as being created by the Darling Brothers. Although the attribution proved to be incorrect, the nickname stuck around all these years. In the article, “Probing the Questionable” written by Samuel Smith, its stated that brass pepperboxes such as this example, were all made in Sweden and brought to the USA by emigrants. It’s amazing to think that these gems survived the trip across the Ocean and still remain in any condition! The Swedish Engholm is said to be one of the earliest percussion pepperboxes. Looking at this classy brass pepperbox, one thinks of a little revolver used by a riverboat gambler playing in a card game steaming down the Mississippi river in the late 1800s, to be pulled out and fired point blank if the need arose. The pepperbox was one of the first repeaters, as everyone else was using a single shot pistol. With each chamber having its own percussion cap and ball, it was always ready. Named because of its resemblance to a household pepper grinder, (this manual example especially), the first pepperbox pistols were produced around 1790. These little revolvers were in their heyday from about 1830 until the Civil War when later versions featured a mechanism that automatically rotated the barrel as the hammer was cocked for each shot. In his travel book, “Roughing it” Mark Twain said this about firing the pepperbox, “…there was no safe place in all the region round about, but behind it.” The overall condition is good. Strong action. All bores are in good shape. The grip is in good shape with minimal handling wear. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/4 inches. Caliber: .28 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
