Colt Single Action Army -U.S. Calvary- 1887 - with Colt & Kopec Letters
Description: Presented for sale is one of the finest Colt Single Action Army U.S. Calvary revolvers most people will ever see in their lifetime. Firstly, this revolver has nearly all the blue and case color finish configuration that the gun originally shipped with on January 18, 1887, as part of a 250 gun order delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt factory. It was ordnance inspected by Sub-Inspector David F. Clark, whose initials may been seen on this revolver's frame, barrel, and cylinder. His grip cartouche, initially applied to the right side grip panel, has been removed during some time period refinishing. It is believed that this revolver remains in it's Calvary configuration due to having avoided the Ordnance Department's recall in 1893 by being stored at one of the state militia armories. Idaho was issued 220 of these Calvary Colt's in April of 1887 and it's probable that this revolver was among these issues. In 1902, most Colt U.S. Calvary revolvers were returned to the Springfield Armory when militia units were issued Colt D.A. .38 revolvers. Springfield Armory probably refurbished and upgraded some units before placing them into storage before they were designated “surplus” and subsequently released commercially. Places such as Bannerman's advertised them as “nearly new”, giving rise to these items of consideration: 1. the ejector tube has been slotted for easy removal of the rod & head assembly, 2. an later oval ejector head has been fitted to this assembly, 3. the front sight has been “raised” with the addition of an extension, 4. the grips have been refinished and cartouches removed, 5. the bore appears to be in “as new” condition, 6. the cylinder lock up remains without any wobble, 7. and the action appears, “as new”. The revolver does have a few honest handling marks from it's 137 years of existence. This Colt Calvary does come with a Colt factory letter detailing it's manufacture and shipment and an Authentication letter from John Kopec detailing his inspection and analysis of it. Both are included in the sale. This gun is considered an antique for BATFE purposes. A wise man once told me to buy 1 high condition Colt SAA every year, and in 20 years I would have a collection envied by most everyone. This is the one you should buy this year. Don't let someone else get it. SOLD Antique: Yes Handgun Caliber: .45 Colt Manufacturer: COLT Model: SAA |
