Smith&Wesson triple lock .44 special
Description: Up now for your review is a bit of an unusual and rare large frame revolver. It was produced toward the end of Smith & Wesson's production of their first N-frame revolvers in or around 1915. Somewhere during 1905 Smith became interested in further developing their already quite successful swing out cylinder pistols from the 1890's only in a larger caliber. In late 1907 or early 1908 they began to market their brand new revolver and caliber which eventually became known as the first model New Century .44 Special triple lock. This gun imediately struck the fancy of the British military and they ordered 5,000 of the pistols for use during the 1st World war. The guns were not developed for use in the muddy trenches used in the defense of England and they failed to function well under these difficult conditions so they were abandoned for a later model of this same pistol which did not include the third locking mechanism in the forward frame. This modification was designated Smith's second model of the new Century revolver and it functioned quite well under harsh conditions. Because the first model was so costly to produce its production ended in 1915 with the total number produced being only around 15,000. Most were made with 6 1/2 inch barrels in the .44 special caliber but a few were made in more well know calibers of that day. Several writters of the time touted this pistol highly and even today some feel it is the best revolver that Smith or any other manufacturer ever produced. Elmer Keith used this gun along with a few others in his experimentation with large caliber highly charged pistols and many feel he was instrumental in encouraging Smith & Wesson to bring out the .44 magnum in 1955. Regardless of these well known facts the pistol now up for review is an excellent example of Smith's triple lock. It not only is in near mint condition but it has the way more rare 4 inch barrel which causes the pistol to balance in the hand better than those with longer barrel lengths in my opinion. Its bore is mint and the grips could not be in any better condition. The action is as smooth as it gets and on close exam I don't see any strong evidence that it has ever been fired. If it has very few rounds ever passed through the cylinder or bore. It does have a noticeable cylinder line which probably is secondary to working the action over the years by enthusiactic examiners. Hopefully my pictures will support this contention but if not I'll try and answer any questions that might arise either by phone or through the G.I.site. Thanks much for taking a look.
